Für viele Freunde der Luftfahrt ist „Captain Joe“ mehr als ein Name, er ist eine Berühmtheit, der eine eigene Webseite, Youtube- und Social-Media Kanal betreibt und Leute auf der gesamten Welt einen sehr persönlichen Einblick in das Fliegen gewährt. Am 16. Jänner hielt er einen spannenden Vortrag auf der Modul University Wien über seinen Werdegang zum Pilot, mit all den Höhen und Tiefen, die man in diesem Beruf erleben kann.

Das Highlight war die Geschichte der Buluga-Wale, die von Südkorea nach Island geflogen wurden, um sie dort wieder an das Leben in freier Wildbahn zu gewöhnen. Die Crew musste nicht nur den Frachtraum auf einem gewissen Temperatur-Level halten, sondern durfte auch nicht in einem zu steilen Winkel landen bzw. starten, da sonst das Wasser aus dem Tank zu fließen drohte.

Die Zuschauer hangen wirklich an den Lippen von Joe, als er seine Erlebnisse aus rund 15 Jahren Erfahrung als Pilot erzählte und sie wollten auch gar nicht wirklich gehen. Selbst nach einer sehr langen Fragerunde, formten sie eine lange Schlange, weil fast jeder noch ein Selfie mit ihm machen wollte.

For many aviation enthusiasts the name „Captain Joe“ means more. He’s a celebrity, has his own website, Youtube and other social media channels and gives people all around the world an insight into the aviation life. On January, 16th he held a speech at the Modul University Vienna about his career as a pilot with all the ups and downs you can imagine in this job.

The highlight was his story about Beluga whales that needed to be transported from South Korea to a special sanctuary in Iceland, to teach them to live again in the wild. Not only needed the crew to control the temperature levels in the cargo area, but they also could not take off or land in a too sharp angle, or the water would have spilled out.

The attendends of the speech were fascinated by Joe’s stories from about 15 years of his experience as a pilot and at the end they did not really want to leave. Even after a long Q&A round a long queue was formed, because almost everyone wanted to have a selfie or an autograph with him.

Vor ein paar Tagen war ich in Lissabon und wollte ein Foto der Ponte Vasco da Gama machen. Es ist die zweitlängste Brücke in Europa und wirklich ein erstaunlicher Anblick. Ihre Pylone ragen bis zu 155m in die Höhe und wenn man sich die Brücke ansieht, so schlängelt sie sich schier endlos über das Meer. Ich sah im Meer eine schöne Reflexion der Brücke und wollte diese einfangen, doch von der Promenade aus war der Winkel einfach nicht schön und hat einen Teil dieser Reflexion abgeschnitten, also musste ich näher ran.

Da zu dieser Zeit Ebbe war, entschloss ich mich über die Steine hinab zu steigen und näher ans Wasser zu gehen. Ich kam aber nicht weit, da das Meer weit zurückgezogen war und meine einzige Chance an den Rand zu kommen war durch den weichen Sand. Hier war mein Risiko, denn ich wusste, ich muss die Schuhe ausziehen, da ich im Sand einsinken werde. An der tiefsten Stelle bin ich fast bis zu den Knien eingesunken und etwas mehr und ich war mir nicht sicher, ob ich da ohne Hilfe wieder hinaus gekommen wäre. Außerdem haben sich im Sand Steine, Muscheln etc… befunden, wodurch ich beim Einsinken einige Kratzer davongetragen habe.

Hier war die Gefahr zum Glück nicht ganz so hoch und im schlimmsten Fall, wäre ich wohl hinausgekommen, aber voll mit Schlamm.

Was wichtig ist, dass mir die möglichen Risiken bewusst gewesen sind und die Konsequenzen daraus. Meine Kleidung hätte komplett verdreckt sein können, vielleicht meine Kamera kaputt werden und im absolut schlechtesten Fall, hätte mich vielleicht die Feuerwehr mit einem Seil rausziehen müssen. War es das Foto wert? Ja und nein. Es ist auf alle Fälle besser geworden, als von der Promenade aus.

Was man immer beherzigen sollte ist, die Situation richtig einzuschätzen, wenn man für ein Foto etwas aufs Spiel setzen will.

• Habe ich die richtige Kleidung / Ausrüstung?
• Bin ich körperlich dazu wirklich in der Lage?
• Was können die Konsequenzen sein, wenn etwas schief geht? (Ausrüstung, Gesundheit…)
• Bringe ich mich, oder andere dadurch in Gefahr?
• Verstoße ich vielleicht gegen ein Gesetz, oder belästige ich jemanden? (Fremdes Grundstück zB)

Es kann sich auszahlen für ein gutes Foto ein Risiko einzugehen, aber bitte immer gut darüber nachdenken was man macht, um keinen Schaden an sich oder etwas anderem anzurichten.

Is the risk worth the photo?

A few days ago I’ve been to Lisbon and wanted to take a picture of the Ponte Vasco da Gama. It’s the second longest bridge in Europe and really an astonishing sight. It’s pillars reach up to 155m in the sky and when you look along the bridge, it lays almost endless over the sea. I saw a beautiful reflection in the sea and wanted to capture it, but from the promenade the angle was not optimal and cut off a part of the mirrored image, so I needed to get closer.

I decided to go closer to the edge of the sea and because it was low tide at that time I went down over the stones into the wet sand. I had to take off my shoes, because I sunk in with my feet and almost to my knees at the deepes point. That was my risk I had to take for this picture. If I would have sunken in more, I definitely would have had some problems to get out again. Furthermore there were stones and seashells in the sand which scratched open my feet.

My luck was that all in all this was not a great danger and probably one of the worst things that could have happened would be my whole clothes covered in mud.

But it was important that I was very aware of the risks and consequences before I went in there. My clothes could have been muddy, maybe my camera could have been broken and in the very worst scenario, the fire fighters would have needed to get me out there with a rope. Was it worth the photo? Yes and no, but it turned out a lot better, than from the promenade.

So always think a lot before you might want to risk something for a photograph.

• Do I have the right clothes / gear?
• Am I really physically able for this situation?
• What could be the consequences if something goes wrong? (Gear, Health…)
• Will I get myself or someone else in danger?
• Will I break any laws or harrass someone? (property owners…)

So, it can be worth to take some risks for a good photo, but please always think twice about what you’re doing before, so you and no one else gets harmed.
